Importance of Religiosity and Spirituality in Institutionalized Elderly

The aim of this study is to understand how religion and spirituality influence the experience of older people in institutional context. It is intended to assess the level of religiosity, spirituality and assess the prevalence of depression among the elderly. In this study participants answered the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Scale of Attitudes to Christianity; Spirituality Assessment Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale GDS 15. Results showed that this sample has some depressive symptoms, and a great sense of religiosity and spirituality. A predictive model for geriatric depression showed significant results on dimensions God and Church (R = 0, 49; p<.05).
